Single incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) is an innovative approach to minimally invasive surgery that utilizes a single access point, typically the umbilicus. It replaces multiple surgical ports with a single port placed through skin of the belly button, giving the patient a superior aesthetic result with the potential for no visible scar.
SILS gallbladder surgery typically lasts less than 1 hour. Cosmetic results are superior with the potential for no visible scar. Post-operative pain is similar or slightly reduced compared to traditional laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Most patients are discharged home on the day of surgery and return to work or school within 1 to 2 weeks. Complications are uncommon but occur at the same frequency as with other surgical methods.
Dr Kaplan performed the first SILS gallbladder surgery in the Mid-Ohio Valley in 2009. He is currently one of four surgeons in West Virginia to have performed over 100 SILS procedures.
